Kurds Executed with Basque Made Weapons

Bernard Isturitz.

Spain's regional parliament of Baskongada on Friday issued a document calling for an "international conference" to find a solution to the situation of the Kurdish people. The parliamentary document states solidarity with the Kurdish people and condemns the "policy of extermination by the government of Turkey against this (Kurdish) people."

The document was approved with the votes of the Basque nationalist parties which control the regional government of Bascongada, and Spain's United Left.

The Bascongada parliament's call for solidarity with the Kurdish people is a farce. The parliament has done nothing to stop the ongoing exports of Basque weapons to Turkey. On top of that, the regional government of Bascongada pay subsidies to Basque arms manufacturers including a subsidy of 700 million pesetas paid to Expal, a Basque arms company that exports to Turkey.

In February the parliament of Bascongada agreed to host a meeting of the Kurdish parliament-in-exile, which meets in various European cities every few months. A tour of special interest to the Kurdish representatives would be a visit to the nearby Basque arms factories. These are the factories where weapons for the government of Turkey are being produced at the profit of Basque businesses who in turn spend some of their profit underwriting the Basque politicians who invited the Kurdish representatives.

It is a dissappointment, though we should not be surprised, for us to watch Euskal Herritarrok participate in this sad drama.
